Final Assembly Work Begins On 5,000th Boeing 737

To Be Delivered To Southwest Airlines Next Month

Boeing announced Thursday that final assembly work has begun on the 5,000th 737 at Boeing's manufacturing facility in Renton, Wash. The airplane, a 737-700 destined for Southwest Airlines, will be delivered next month.

In the picture below, the wings and landing gear are being joined to the aircraft's fuselage. Last-stage assembly and interiors installation will begin once the airplane joins the moving assembly line. (Note the winglet, produced by Aviation Partners Inc. and then shipped to Everett, is already painted.)

Last month, Boeing celebrated the 6,000th 737 order -- and with the order count now standing at 6,099 airplanes ordered by 231 customers, the 737 is the best selling airliner of all time.
