Feds Sue AAL Over Fuel Leak

Accuse Airline Of Flying 54 Times With Unaddressed Maintenance Problem

Federal prosecutors in New York filed a $1 million lawsuit against American Airlines, accusing the carrier of flying a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 with a known fuel leak more than 50 times before the problem was finally addressed.

The FAA says the leak was first detected November 17th, 2003, by an FAA inspector who was a passenger on the MD-82 (file photo of type, below) flying from Orlando, FL, to LaGuardia, NY. But the leak wasn't repaired until December 2nd. To make matters worse, the defect wasn't logged.

"These violations reflect a disregard for the safety of passengers and the regulations that exist to safeguard our skies," US Attorney Roslynn R. Mauskopf said in a written statement quoted by Bloomberg News.

"We are aware of what might have precipitated this lawsuit," American spokesman Tim Wagner told Bloomberg. "It's something we have been working on with the FAA for over two years now, and we will continue to do that."
