Modular Design Reduces Lifecycle Costs, Increases Reliability
Raytheon will design, develop and manufacture the projector for BAE Systems' Digital Light Engine head-up display on the F-22 Raptor. The digital HUD upgrade will integrate seamlessly into the F-22's existing HUD space and enhance the pilot's situational awareness in the cockpit.
HUDs are located immediately in front of the pilot's line of sight and combine real-time mission critical information with the outside world view. BAE Systems' new DLE is an electro-optic upgrade to traditional analog HUDs, replacing conventional cathode ray tube devices.
"Because our design is modular, it's a direct replacement and doesn't require changes to current HUD optics or aircraft mechanical interfaces," said Reg Jonas, manager of optical design at Raytheon ELCAN Optical Technologies, the source for the projector. "It will reduce lifecycle costs and increase reliability of the overall HUD system."
BAE Systems' HUD technology can be found in many aircraft, including modern fighters, military trainers and business jets.
"Our DLE upgrade will bring a completely modernized HUD solution to the F-22," said Andy Humphries, director of Advanced Displays at BAE Systems. "We're working with Raytheon to help ensure this new technology is reliable and affordable for the combat Raptor fleet."
Raytheon is a leader in the design and manufacturing of precision optical systems. Development of the DLE projector draws on past experience in developing digital projection systems for both military and commercial applications. Deliveries begin early next year.
