Aviators Model Code of Conduct Version 3.0 Released

Program Designed to Support the Aviation Community

The Aviators Model Code of Conduct (AMCC) Version 3.0 has been released by the Aviators Code Initiative (ACI).

Developed by the ACI’s Permanent Editorial Board, a team of aviation professionals, and drawing upon decades of research and experience, the Code recommends operating practices to enhance the quality and safety of flight operations. The AMCC applies to a range of operating environments, and pilot experience and certifications. Revisions to Version 3.0 include a general update, enhanced treatment of new technologies, and a response to the increasing presence of uncrewed aircraft.

Pilot conduct impacts the entire aviation community, including its safety culture. A code of conduct can help achieve new levels of proficiency. The AMCC is just such a tool, a set of guidelines adaptable to each pilot and organizational need.

The AMCC:

  • promotes aviator professionalism and safety, and contributes to the aviation community and society at large,
  • encourages ethical behavior, personal responsibility, and good judgment, and
  • supports improved communications between pilots, regulators, and the aviation industry.

Support for the AMCC has been considerable:

  • “‘It takes a village.’ Every aviation-type club, association, and community must embrace and codify a culture of compliance and responsible behavior. The availability and adoption of the AMCC eliminates any excuse not to.” – Tom Kieffer, Safety Committee Chairman, TBM Owners & Pilots Association (TBMOPA).
  • "Aviation safety depends on each pilot's personal commitment to achieving the excellence defined in the Aviators Model Code of Conduct." – David St. George, Executive Director, Society of Aviation and Flight Educators (SAFE).

The Code of Conduct received extensive industry reviews from many highly respected trainers, professional pilots, regulators, and researchers.

It presents a vision of flight excellence within its seven sections:

  1. General Responsibilities of Aviators;
  2. Passengers and People on the Surface;
  3. Training and Proficiency;
  4. Security;
  5. Environmental Issues;
  6. Use of Technology; and
  7. Advancement and Promotion of Aviation.

The Code of Conduct is a living document, updated periodically to reflect changes in standards, practice, and the aviation environment.

The Aviators Model Code of Conduct Version 3.0 is the latest in a family of similar codes developed by the ACI including codes for aviation maintenance technicians, designated pilot examiners, certified flight instructors, glider pilots, gyroplane pilots, helicopter pilots, light sport pilots, seaplane pilots, student pilots, and uncrewed aircraft pilots. Each is available as a free public service along with supporting materials at secureav.com.
