Jury Stings Boeing For $2.5 Million In Age Bias Case

Engineer Claimed He Was Wrongly Turned Down As Test Pilot

A 59-year old engineer at Boeing's Wichita plant said his age and his Cuban heritage were the reasons the company denied him a job as a test pilot in 2001 -- and last week, a federal jury agreed.

The jury in Wichita, KS, awarded Mario Goico $2.5 million -- $370,000 in what he would have been paid as a test pilot, $31,000 in back pay and $625,000 for his pain and suffering. The jury also slapped Chicago-based Boeing with $1.5 in punitive damages.

Goico, a Republican state representative from Wichita, said, "I'm glad I went over there and I showed the facts of the case and the jurors saw the truth of what had occurred."

Boeing spokesman Dick Ziegler said the company was "very disappointed" in the verdict, but gave no indication whether the aerospace giant will appeal.
