Five Lost In Air Ambulance Tragedy

Lear Down Near Mexican Border

A Learjet air ambulance went down in the mountains south of San Diego (CA) early Sunday morning, killing all five people on board. It was the first fatal accident for Med Flight Air Ambulance since the company was formed 25-years ago. Med Flight has now suspended operations.

The two pilots, two paramedics and flight nurse had just flown a passenger from Mexico to San Diego and was returning to its base in Albuquerque when it went down about two miles east of Brown Field. Brown is a port of entry airport, used by GA aircraft traveling to the US from Mexico.

Med Flight shut down after the accident "to give the crews time to debrief and cope with the circumstances," said CEO and medical director Larry Levy.

Med Flight Air Ambulance operates two Learjets -- a 25D and a 35A. It wasn't immediately clear which of the two aircraft went down.
