Three Fatally Injured In SAR Accident In Spain

Helicopter Rotors Touched A Mountainside During Rescue Attempt

Three members of a Spanish police force search and rescue (SAR) crew were fatally injured Sunday when the helicopter they were aboard went down during a rescue attempt.

According to a statement released by the regional government of Castilla y Leon and relayed by the Associated Press, the three police officers, all members of Spain's rural Civil Guard police, were attempting to rescue an injured mountain climber near Polinosa about 270 miles north of Madrid when the accident occurred. They had lowered a fourth crewmember by winch to the injured person when the helicopter's main rotor touched the mountainside. The surviving crewmember said that the aircraft fell down the slope, fatally injuring the three still on board the aircraft.

No one on the ground was injured. Four additional helicopters and an ambulance were sent to the accident scene, the statement said.
