The People Have Spoken: Hillsboro Air Show Will Return For 2007

July Accident Cast Doubt On Show's Future

Aero-News learned Thursday that following a four-month review process, the Port of Portland, OR -- in conjunction with the City of Hillsboro -- has decided to grant a permit to the Oregon International Airshow for a summer 2007 event.

That decision to bring the popular air show back for a 19th year comes after a fatal July 16 accident cast doubt on its future.

As Aero-News reported, California aviation attorney Robert Guilford had just taken off from the airport in his 1951 Hawker Hunter, intending to performing a non-aerobatic, low-altitude flyby before returning home. The plane went down shortly after takeoff.

Four homes were destroyed by the impact... but there were no injuries to those on the ground.

"As we make this decision, we send our sympathy to the families in Hillsboro who lost their homes," the Port of Portland said in a release to ANN. "The accident has been profoundly disruptive to their daily lives and to their peace of mind. In addition, our condolences go to the family of pilot Bob Guilford."

"Over the past few months, we have solicited input and feedback from Washington County residents; the support from the community has been overwhelming. The Oregon International Airshow is valued by Washington County residents, and a majority of public comments received encouraged us to continue to allow this community event to occur at the Hillsboro Airport."

A small but vocal percentage of area residents cited the accident as a rallying cry to put a halt to the air show... or even to place restrictions on the busy suburban airport.

"At the same time, we’ve heard concerns about safety and suggestions for making the event better–suggestions we’ve taken to heart," the Port said.  "We have forwarded these to airshow organizers for their consideration. The Port and the Oregon International Airshow have instituted changes that we believe will improve the safety of the 2007 Airshow."

"Safety at the airport and to the surrounding community has always been our foremost concern. From day-to-day operations to special events, the Port of Portland is committed to operating a safe, efficient, and compatible airport. The Oregon International Airshow is one way we get to celebrate the community in which we operate, and the Port welcomes the group back for its 2007 show."
