C-32A Causes $1 Million Runway Damage During Presidential Visit To Las Cruces

Well, they were told not to land there.

A C-32A accompanying Air Force One caused about $1 million damage to the runway at Las Cruces International Airport accompanying President Bush on a visit there last week, according to airport officials.

The aircraft, a military version of the 757, left deep ruts in the runway, marked by skid marks that extended more than 2500 feet down the runway, according to KRQE-TV.

Facilities Director Brian Denmark said he and his staff made it quite clear to the Bush administration that the runway couldn't handle the weight of the Boeing aircraft -- but that it landed anyway.

Las Cruces has closed that runway -- on of three on the airport -- indefinitely.
