NTSB Prelim: Downed Cirrus' CAPS Pin Not Removed Before Flight

Pilot Said No Icing Seen Shortly Before Fatal Accident

The National Transportation Safety Board released its Preliminary report on the flight and demise of a couple and family friend traveling from Sheboygan to New Richmond last month.

Despite a flight profile that might otherwise suggest it, the pilot of the ill-fated Cirrus SR20 said he was not experiencing icing prior to rapidly losing altitude and radio communications before the plane's fatal crash near Menomonee, WI on the evening of January 30.

The Chippewa Valley Herald says the NTSB investigation has revealed the aircraft's parachute system had been deployed, but its activation handle, handle holder and an activation cable had separated from the plane's fuselage.

The report went on to say, "The . . . safety pin with the red colored 'Remove Before Flight' tag was found in the activation handle still in the handle holder. According to the Cirrus Pilot's Operating Handbook, the preflight checklist calls for the . . . safety pin to be removed prior to flight."

The NTSB is continuing the investigation.
