Boeing May Drop 787-3 Variant

Last Of Short-Haul Customers Move To Other Models

Boeing lost the last of it's 787-3 short-haul customers last week when All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced it was cancelling it's -3 order in favor of 28 additional longer-haul 787-8s.  The move is aimed at getting ANA's Dreamliner fleet into operation faster.

Despite a successful test flight late last year, the 787 is well behind Boeing's initial schedule. The development of the -3 model has been hindered further as resources were directed at the long-haul -8 model in 2008.

"Going forward, we’ll continue to assess the market viability of the -3" wrote Randy Tinseth, vice president, marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, on his official Boeing blog site.  "Simply put, getting aircraft into their hands for earlier delivery was a better solution for them." he wrote.

ANA was Boeing's first Dreamliner customer in 2004, ordering 30 short-range and 20 long-haul jets. Their 787-8 order now stands at 55.
