Pilot Ejects Safely After F-16 Skids Off Runway In CO

An F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot, out of Buckley AFB, ejected safely after an emergency landing June 28 at nearby Lamar Airfield.

The accident occurred during a training flight in a southeast Colorado military training area. He was attempting an emergency landing after receiving a cockpit fire warning indication. The pilot’s wingman confirmed there was a fire in the aircraft tail section.

The pilot followed emergency procedures and landed the aircraft at the nearest suitable airport, where he lost directional control upon landing and skidded off the runway. He then ejected safely and received minor injuries. There was no ordnance onboard the aircraft.

The aircraft is assigned to the Colorado Air National Guard’s 140th Wing.

A board of military officers is estimating the damage to the aircraft and the cause of the accident.
