Polish Air Force Leader Lost In Aerobatic Accident

Was Promoted To General Only Last Week

Poland is mourning the loss of its Air Force chief, General Jacek Bartoszcze, who died in the crash of a two-place aircraft on Saturday, according to his country's military.

The 44-year old general, who had achieved his rank only last week, was killed while performing aerobatics in the aircraft (type unknown) in a rural part of eastern Poland.

"An inquiry is under way into the crash of the plane in which the General Bartoszcze was killed," Army General Staff spokesman Colonel Zdzislaw Gnatowski told Reuters.

TVN-24, a private Polish television station, reported Bartoszcze, who was trained in the United States, was a forward-leaning advocate of air force modernization. His goal was to bring the Polish Air Force, with its long and valiant tradition, up to the technical standards put forth by NATO.
