One Survivor, 42 Dead In Slovak Plane Downing

Troops Were Flying Home From Kosovo

Recovery efforts continue at the scene of an accident involving a Russian-built AN-24 military plane (file photo of type, right) that went down Thursday night near the Hungarian town of Telkibanya, about one mile from the Slovak border.

CNN reports that out of 43 passengers onboard the aircraft -- which was reportedly bringing troops home from Kosovo -- there was only one survivor. A 30-year-old soldier reportedly suffered only minor injuries, and was even able to call his wife on his way to the hospital, according to military officials.

It is not yet known what brought the military transport down in a remote mountainous area, after it strayed Hungarian officials.

Hungarian Defense Minister Ferenc Juhasz told ABC News the crew aboard a second Slovak military aircraft -- an AN-26 flying a few minutes behind -- witnessed the accident.

"The [accident] plane was constantly descending and preparing to land... and the deviation was noticed only at the last moment," Juhasz said.
