Pilots Lost In Air Show Midair In Poland

Remainder Of Radom Air Show Cancelled

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 09.01.07 1515 EDT: Two pilots were killed Saturday when their aircraft collided in midair during a performance at the 2007 Radom Air Show in Poland.

Images taken of the accident by a Reuters photographer captured the moment the two Zlin Z-526AFS aircraft collided. Both were part of a three-ship formation that had fanned out; the accident occurred as the planes converged on point for the next segment of the performance.

Video footage of the collision shows the two accident aircraft colliding at an approximately 90 degree angle relative to each other, as one of the planes exited a loop. The third plane, also converging on point, flew safely past the collision.

A notice on the air show website identified the victims as Lech Marchelewski, 62, and 24-year-old Piotr Banachowicz. Both were members of the Zelazny Air Show Team.

The remainder of the air show was cancelled.
