FIT Aviation Program Plans To Resume Flight Operations Monday

Return To Flight Training Set For 0600

The Florida Institute of Technology aviation program in Melbourne, FL, plans to resume flight operations following the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

The program suspended flight ops earlier this week at the recommendation of the NTSB. An accident at Palm Beach International Airport Nov. 11 fatally injured two students, an instructor, and one other school employee. The NTSB had recommended that the school allow more time for grieving before putting students and instructors back in the air.

Orlando cable news channel 13 reports that the school is cooperating fully with the NTSB investigation. Theresa Castle, acting director of aviation at FIT, said there will be an internal review of the accident which will take into account the NTSB findings as well as consultation with other aviation experts.

Castle was made acting director when Michael Gaffney was "relieved of his duties" as director of aviation following the accident, according to multiple media sources including the Palm Beach Post. No explanation was given for the change.

The NTSB released its preliminary report on the accident Tuesday.
