ATA Airlines Loosens Cellular Phone Restrictions

Giving customers more opportunity to stay connected, ATA Airlines has announced a change (as have a number of other airlines) in its onboard cell phone usage policy. Passengers are now permitted to use cell phones and pagers sooner after landing. As of Nov. 14, 2003, crews began notifying passengers that they may turn on cell phones and pagers once an aircraft has landed and is clear of an active runway. ATA's new onboard cell phone usage policy applies to all ATA and ATA Connection (operated by Chicago Express Airlines, Inc.) scheduled service. No change was made in ATA's pre-departure policy, which allows customers to use cell phones and pagers until the aircraft doors have been closed prior to takeoff. Federal Communications Commission rules still prohibit usage while in flight.

ATA operates significant scheduled service from Chicago-Midway, Indianapolis, New York, San Francisco and Hawaii to over 40 business and vacation destinations.
