Spot Trace Tells You When You're Airplane Is Moving

Spot LLC ... a wholly owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. ... introduced the new SPOT Trace at a news conference Monday at AirVenture.

SPOT Trace uses satellite technology to track anything, anytime, anywhere. The company says the device is valuable for operations like flights schools, who need to be able to track where their airplanes and students are. It can also be an effective theft deterrent.

The Spot Trace will send an email or text message once per day to its owner when it is not moving. It can be placed anywhere in the airplane with a clear view, and the most common placement is on the glareshield. A built-in motion detector alerts the owner when the device is moving, and then sends a message every 2.5 or 5 minutes, through customizable tracking and notification features, such as power off and daily status messages are included with Basic Service. SPOT Trace’s battery life of up to 18 months and available line power option lets users confidently monitor assets on and off the grid, in near real-time using Google Maps.

The company said that the device is also likely the least expensive aviation hardware available for purchase at AirVenture. The device retails for just under $100, with service contracts starting at $100 per year.
