German Plane Violates Bulgarian Airspace

MiG Scrambled To Intercept Wayward Lufthansa Airliner

A Bulgarian MiG-29 made "an emergency flight" to intercept a German aircraft that violated the country's airspace Monday, according to media reports.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Veselin Bliznakov stated the Lufthansa flight was not intially believed to have been a planned flight, and the aircraft did not respond to identification requests.

What could have been a potentially disasterous situation was averted, however, when the aircraft in question was later verified as being a regular passenger flight into the former Soviet-bloc country.
