Airborne 04.19.19: Spin Record Attempt, Falcon Heavy, BendixKing

Also: TBM 910 Model Year 2019, Gone West: Owen Garriott, Parrot ANAFI Thermal, SpaceIL $1 Million

Aerobatic pilot Spencer Suderman is gearing up to attempt a new world record for the most inverted flat spins in an aircraft.

This will be Suderman’s second shot at the record after he aborted an attempt in February. “I entered the spin and the plane went around faster than expected at altitude, so fast that the transverse G-loads were far greater than I was prepared for, which made it hard to breath. That coupled with the negative G-loads from being inverted made the situation intolerable.” Rough seas caused damage to the SpaceX Falcon Heavy center core after its second flight. The company launched the Arabsat-6A communications satellite in its first commercial flight for Falcon Heavy. The two outer boosters landed safely back at Cape Canaveral, but the center core, which landed on the "Of Course I Still Love You" barge in the Atlantic Ocean, tumbled over on the autonomous ship in heavy seas on its return to Port Canaveral in Florida. BendixKing has unveiled its new AeroVue Touch Integrated Flight Deck. This Class III cockpit system includes three smart, high-resolution touchscreen displays that incorporate all required functions into one panel-mounted flight deck. The system starts at $99,000, complete. By upgrading to the AeroVue Touch Integrated Flight Deck, operators get a connected cockpit that enables live flight-data streaming to the ground in real time for enhanced search and rescue and flight analysis. It can also eliminate the need to return aircraft to maintenance centers to update navigation charts by allowing operators to update them wirelessly, wherever the aircraft is located. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
