A Little Attitude For Everyone

Pocket EFIS At An Affordable Price

By David Juwel

It doesn’t make sense to invest $20,000 to $100,000 for a glass panel in an aircraft that may only have a market value of $20,000 to $50,000. There was a void in that segment of the market, and because of it, apps and iPads have gained significant market share in the aviation arena. The problem is, those solutions are not accurate enough to be relied upon. So Dynon has stepped up and introduced their D-1 Pocket Panel which is a small portable EFIS with a price point of $1,425.00.

Small and portable, it can be moved from aircraft to aircraft. It comes with a RAM suction cup mount, but it can also be mounted in an instrument hole or even Velcro’d somewhere on the panel. The battery lasts about 4-hours, but you can plug it into your aircraft electrical system to keep it charged.

The D-1 Pocket Panel cannot connect to the pitot and static ports, so it substitutes air speed, altitude, and heading with GPS ground speed, altitude and ground track. Unlike apps, this gives you a solid-state accelerometer and a solid-state rate sensor (gyro). You get a true artificial horizon with accurate pitch and roll. It won’t drift and no caging is needed for aerobatics. Turn rate, vertical speed, and slip/skid ball is included. It still has to be a back-up to your primary instruments because it doesn’t measure true airspeed. GPS ground speed is not the same as pitot airspeed.

Dynon also introduced their new Skyview ADS-B UAT Band Weather and Traffic Receiver. The installed receiver integrates into your Skyview map. For a price point of $995.00, it gives you ADS-B Weather and TFR’s, and ADS-B Traffic when combined with their Skyview ADS-B Mode S Transponder. This is a permanently mounted ADS-B solution specifically designed for experimental and light sport aircraft.

In addition to the above, Dynon is announcing a Skyview Version 4.0 firmware for the Skyview Integrated Glass Panel system. This is a free upgrade for all existing Skyview owners.
