Italian KC-130J Transfers Fuel To Eurofighter In Successful Tests

Five Sorties Flown, Including One Night Operation

Aero-News has learned successful in-flight refueling trials of a two-seat Eurofighter Typhoon by an Italian Air Force KC-130J Hercules tanker have been successfully completed in Decimomannu.

The aircraft -- the Italian IPA2, used in Alenia Aeronautica's testing -- accomplished flight tests through five missions, following a series of ground trials. One in a "clean" configuration, while the others with a configuration with three supplementary tanks, two under the wings and a central one under the fuselage.

Three of the trials were conducted on the same day, and one test flight occurred at night. Overall, the Typhoon made eight "wet" contacts with the tanker, in which fuel was transferred from the KC-130J.

Two years ago, the Italian Air Force initiated a program to configure eight KC-130Js in the tanker configuration for their use, when requested, for domestic needs and within international operations.
