An Amazing Aviator Flies West
Sporty's Hal Shevers
sent us the following missive in remembrance of master aviator Al
Passell... ANN extends our condolences to the family and friends of
this esteemed flyer.
Statement From Sportys' Hal Shevers
With deep sorrow and extreme sadness, I regret to inform you
that Alfred (Al) Passell passed away at his home on Monday, May 23
at the age of 80 following a courageous two-month battle with
cancer. Al was laid to rest earlier today in Cincinnati, Ohio.
I cannot begin to describe what Al has done for general aviation
and what he meant to the Sporty's family. I was fortunate to have
met Al just as he began his aviation career at the Cincinnati
Lunken Airport in the early 60s. Prior to his aviation calling, Al
had served his country in WWII, graduated from the University of
Cincinnati, and worked with his brother in the family business.
After quickly joining the ranks of certified flight instructors, Al
joined me as one of the original instructors in the AOPA three-day
ground school where we taught side by side for many years. It was
obvious from the beginning that Al's enthusiasm for the subject,
his relationship with students, and his good-natured personality
were a special combination making him a very popular
instructor.
For the past 20 years, Al called the Clermont County Airport and
Sporty's home as an FAA designated examiner, flight instructor,
mentor and friend. Al touched the lives of thousands of aspiring
aviators, certifying more than half of the pilots in the Cincinnati
area throughout that time.
Al was a dedicated professional. He was loved by all and will be
deeply missed. Al's contributions to education and passion for
aviation will continue through the thousands of lives he has
touched so deeply.
Al has flown west, but will always hold a special place in our
hearts and will always be part of the Sporty's team. Memorials may
be made to the AOPA Air Safety Foundation.
