Unruly Passenger Causes Flight Diversion

FBI Says He Blames Cookies Laced With Medical Marijuana

A passenger who became unruly on a flight from Philadelphia to LA Sunday said he had eaten cookies baked with medical marijuana, which caused his unusual behavior. The flight diverted to Pittsburgh, where he was removed from the plane and arrested.

The FBI says 30-year-old Kinman Chan, a resident of San Francisco, was charged with interfering with the duties of a flight attendant based on allegations he fought with crew members on the plane. The Associated Press reports that the crew said he made odd gestures, then entered the plane's lavatory just after takeoff and stared to scream.

When he came out of the restroom, his  "pants were down, his shirt was untucked and all the compartments in the restroom were opened," a crewmember said.  Chan told the FBI that by that time, he'd "come back to reality."

During his interview, Chan told agents he had a card for medical marijuana, and that he had taken a "double dose."  His medical need for marijuana was confirmed by Margaret Philbin, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Pittsburgh, but she declined to identify Chan's condition.

If convicted, Chan could face 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
