Five Students Lost In Indiana Plane Accident

Plane Went Down In Fog On Approach To Land

School officials have confirmed that the five people onboard a Cessna 206 (file photo of type, below right) that went down Thursday night while on an ILS approach to land at Bloomington's Monroe County Airport were students from Indiana University's School Of Music.

"This would be a tragedy for the school," IU spokeswoman Susan Williams said. "It's an important school. Some of the best music students in the world come here."

The students were heading to Bloomington from Lafayette, IN when ATC lost radar contact with the plane, State Police Sgt. Joe Watts told the Associated Press. The plane was on approach to land when it went down just south of the airport shortly before midnight in fog, and the pilot had activated the airport's runway lights.

Several 911 callers reported hearing "the spit and sputtering of an airplane," said Van Buren Township deputy fire chief Mike Corman.

The victims' names were not immediately released. The FAA and NTSB are now investigating the accident.
