Construction Underway On New Lone Star Flight Museum

Groundbreaking Ceremony Held Monday At Ellington Field

The Lone Star Flight Museum has broken ground on its new Lone Star Flight Museum and Aviation Hall of Fame at Ellington Field (KEFD) in Houston, TX.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held November 9, and the new facility will place a special focus on STEM education, according to museum officials.

The museum has been in Galveston since the 1980s, according to a report from Texas Public Media. But it was damaged by Hurricane Ike in September, 2008, and the museum board decided that it should be moved further inland to prevent another such incident.

The board conducted a capital campaign to raise $25 million for construction of the new facility, and hope to raise another $10 million, according to the report. If all goes according to plan, it will be open in 2017, which is the same year the Super Bowl will be played in Houston.
