Flight Training Suspended For Hundreds Of Saudi Military Students

Move Follows Shooting Incident At NAS Pensacola Last Week

The Department of Defense has suspended flight training for more than 850 flight students on U.S. military bases following Friday's deadly shooting at NAS Pensacola.

Fox News reports that, according to senior defense officials, the suspension is part of a larger review of all international training on U.S. bases.

While flight training has been suspended for the students, their classroom work will continue. Navy Commander Clay Doss said that flight training will resume later this week for other foreign students, but did not say how long the suspension of flight training for Saudi students would last.

The Saudi government supports the DOD decision, according to the report.

The Defense Department will also take immediate steps to strengthen the vetting process for international military students.

The gunman was identified as 21-year-old Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani (pictured), an officer in the Saudi Air Force. He opened fire at NAS Pensacola, killing three U.S. military personnel and wounding eight others. Alshamrani was shot and killed by local police.

The shooting is being investigated by the FBI as an act of terrorism.
