Coast Guard Suspends Search For Reported Plane Down In Lake Pontchartrain

Aircraft Said To Be Seen Going Into The Water Saturday

After a plane was reported to be seen going down in Lake Pontchartrain north of New Orleans, Louisiana Saturday, the Coast Guard mounted a search of the area, but turned up no evidence of an accident. The search was suspended Sunday.

Coast Guard rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and Coast Guard Station New Orleans conducted more than eight hours of searches covering 155 square miles.

Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call reporting a small plane crashing into the lake around 2000 CDT Saturday. Coast Guard rescue crews were immediately dispatched to search the area.  St. Tammany Parish marine units were also on scene Saturday night.

A small plane was reportedly seen going into Lake Pontchartrain on the east side of the Causeway Bridge between mile markers four and eight. A missing or overdue aircraft had not been reported at the time of the initial call and no other reports came in overnight.
