Moody AFB HEF System Activated Fire Suppression System

Fire Suppression System Triggered During A Lightning Storm Last Week

The high expansion foam system in the Fuels Barn, Hangar 646, at Moody Air Force Base was activated during a lightning storm Feb. 6 at approximately 7 p.m.

Five HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters were inside at the time of the activation. No personnel were present. Moody AFB fire department, civil engineering and maintenance professionals responded immediately.

The 23d Maintenance Group is currently working with system program engineers from the Robins Air Force Base Logistic Center to dispose of the foam and recover the aircraft. There was no damage to the aircraft.

The Hangar 646 system was converted from Aqueous Film-Forming Foam to the current High Expansion Foam in May of 2014. High Expansion Foam system contains no hazardous chemicals or compounds. The High Expansion Foam system is designed to discharge foam inside an aircraft hangar in the event of a fire.
