Pakistani Female Fighter Pilot Fatally Injured In Training Accident

Marium Mukhtiar Was One Of Only A Few Women Flying As A Fighter Pilot In Pakistan

One of only a handful of female fighter pilots flying for Pakistan was fatally injured in a training accident when her plane experienced an "in-flight emergency" earlier this week. Marium Mukhtiar and her co-pilot ejected from the stricken airplane, but the BBC reports that she later died from her injuries sustained during the ejection in a hospital.

The Pakistani Air Force said that the flight took place over Mianwali district in Pakistan. Mukhtiar was one of about 20 female fighter pilots in the PAF, which only began accepting women in combat roles in 2006.

The male co-pilot was not seriously injured in the accident. There has been no indication as to the nature of the emergency that forced the two to eject from the FT-7PG aircraft.

"Both the pilots handled the serious emergency with professionalism and courage and tried to save the ill-fated aircraft till the very last minute," a PAF statement said.
