Source: Charles Danger, the top building official with Miami-Dade County, on the temporary control tower now in place at Opa-locka Airport. The FAA temporary tower -- consisting of a specially-designed trailer, mounted on two steel storage containers -- will be in place until at least the first part of 2009, as work continues on a new $11 million control tower for the South Florida airport. That means three years of controllers having to climb a ladder to get to work, and having to keep an eye out for strong winds -- say, from a hurricane -- that could turn the precarious tower into flying shrapnel. Good thing FAA buildings don't have to meet building codes...
