Boxcars Get Their Own Website

Alaskan Heavy-Haulers Grab Limelight, Blot Out the Sun

One of our favorite stories of last year had to do with the resurrection of a long-dormant C-119 "Flying Boxcar," that spent many years just sitting at an Alaskan airport, getting attention from her owner, and braving the elements (and a few vandals).

After heroic efforts, this big, capable bird was brought back to life, and is now flying for her keep, earning money by moving things that other aircraft simply can't accommodate. The C-119's lifting ability, coupled with her short-field prowess, makes the Boxcar simply the only way to move certain things -- or to move a lot of smaller things at once.

There are some great photos of the planes and the restoration of this three-engined machine [that's a jet on the top --ed]; and there's also a section on what the planes need (just in case you're sitting on a hangar-load of parts). It's quite a story -- check out how the principals tell it!
