Airborne 12.16.19: C-130 Tragedy, Drone Racing Showdown, AirVenture 2020

Human remains have been recovered from a Chilean Air Force C-130 which went down last week while enroute to Antarctica. Arturo Merino, head of Chile’s air force, said there were no survivors from the accident.

The plane had departed Monday from the southern city of Punta Arenas in Chilean Patagonia. There were 12 passengers and 17 crew members on board the aircraft. “The condition of the remains we discovered make it practically impossible that anyone could have survived the airplane accident,” Merino said. The first debris from the aircraft was found by Chilean air force officials Wednesday. Additional wreckage was found by a Brazilian ship operating in the area. There has been a lot of talk about autonomous drones that has even filtered down into drone racing. But when it came to a head-to-head matchup between a human pilot and a programmed drone ... the human won the day. The race was organized by the Drone Racing League in partnership with Lockheed Martin. DRL wanted to be the first to pit its new AI racing drones against a human competitor. The drone pilot was Gabriel Kocher from Switzerland. The AI drone was Team MAVLab, which had won LMC's $1 million prize for being the fastest AI-controlled drone around the race course. The aircraft and personnel of the USAF Special Operations Command (AFSOC) will be among the highlighted programs at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2020. AFSOC is comprised of highly trained, rapidly deployable Airmen, who conduct special operations missions worldwide. Airmen who undertake Special Operations careers specialize in unique skills such as parachuting, scuba diving, rappelling, motorcycling, survival skills, and more. Aircraft in the command include specialized mobility aircraft such as the MC-130, CV-22 and C-146, Close Air Support aircraft such as the AC-130 gunship, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft such as the MQ-9 and U-28. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
