Yamaha Offices Raided Over Chinese Helicopter Sales

Company Denies Accusations Of Illegal Activity

Aero-News learned Monday that Japanese police raided 20 offices belonging to Yamaha Motor, over suspicions the company attempted to illegally export agricultural-use helicopters that can be converted for military applications.

Yamaha officials denied the charges, saying it had exported nine units of the unmanned helicopter over the years to an aerial photography company in Beijing, but for some reason the tenth aroused suspicion.

In Japanese applications, the unmanned helicopter flies at low altitudes up to 150 meters,  and is used to spray ag chemicals -- but Japanese officials claim it can also be converted to spray biological weapons.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe told the Financial Express the case was "very regrettable."

Japan's NHK also reported police raided the Chinese-run trading company in Tokyo that allegedly brokered the deals.
