Airborne 02.13.19: Inverted Flat Spin Record, FAA Bill, Black Wings Exhibit

Also: Bombardier New 50-Seater, Lynx FBO Acquisition, UPS Air Cargo Contract, NetJets Lawsuit

Spencer Suderman’s signature move is a called an inverted flat spin. On February 17, 2019, the professional aerobatic pilot will attempt to smash his own world record by spinning his biplane 120 times over Yuma, Arizona. Suderman, who lives in St. Augustine, Florida, is an air show performer and two-time Guinness World Records title holder for the most inverted flat spins in an aircraft.

For this attempt, Suderman will fly an experimental Pitts Special S-1c. The plane is a different version of the one he used in 2016 to set the current world record of 98 spins. It is lighter and has a flat bottom wing, which lowers the stall speed and should allow it to reach a higher altitude. It also has a smaller engine that was custom built with extreme modifications for the attempt. Suderman says he wants to do more than just break his own world record, he wants to crush it. The Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Aviation Rick Larsen (D-WA) have introduced legislation that would protect FAA programs and personnel, and the U.S. aviation industry as a whole, from future shutdowns of the Federal Government. The National Model Aviation Museum in Muncie, Indiana, is again hosting Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition, in celebration of Black History Month, and running through March. The Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight, chronicles a powerful group of aviation proponents who challenged these obstacles and created their own legacy in the world of flight. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
