Boeing Names KAL Division To Build Dreamliner Wingtips

Not Just A Supplier, But A Customer, Too!

Boeing has selected the Aerospace Division of Korean Air, KAL-ASD, to manufacture wingtips for an extended-range version of its upcoming 787 airliner.

"KAL-ASD is a proven performer," said 787 project VP and General Manager Mike Bair. "We selected them to be part of our team because of their capabilities and competencies."

According to a company press release, the 17' raked wingtips will be utilized on the middle-child 787-8 model, designed to carry up to 223 passengers as far as 8,500 nm.  The aircraft will be bookended by the higher capacity 787-3, carrying 296 passengers on ranges up to 3,500 nm, and the longer 787-9, which will carry 259 passengers a range of 8,300 nm.

Korean Air is also a launch customer for the 787. As was reported by Aero-News last April, the company has also ordered 10 Dreamliners, with options for 10 more, for its commercial aviation operation.

"We are very pleased to be involved in the Boeing 787-8 raked wing tip production, not only as a supplier but also as a partner in the aircraft design and development stage," said Mr. Suh Sang Mook, president of KAL-ASD. He added, "Korean Air's Aerospace Division has greatly expanded its capabilities over the years and we aim to increase our presence in this market."

Founded in 1976, KAL-ASD has grown to be a major supplier of wings, fuselage, and empennage components to major aircraft companies worldwide.
