The FAA said that Harris conducting a local flight which originated at Hickory Regional Airport. He was reportedly returning to the airport when the accident occurred.

The plane went down about a mile from the airport, and impacted terrain near a local bank. There did not appear to be any damage to the bank building, according to television station WBTV.
