Man Extradited Back To US Following Flight To Cuba

Charged With Stealing Plane, Kidnapping

Aero-News has learned the man charged with stealing a Cessna 172 from a Florida airport and flying it to Cuba -- with his young son onboard -- has been extradited back to the US to face charges.

The Associated Press reports David Ray Franklin is charged with interstate transportation of a stolen aircraft and international parental kidnapping, according to the US Attorney's Office.

As Aero-News reported, Franklin, 52, and his son took off in the stolen Skyhawk from the Marathon airport on the morning of September 30. A few days later, Cuban officials notified the US Interests Section in Havana that a plane matching that description had landed in Cuba.

Franklin, who does not have legal custody of his 10-year-son, faces up to 10 years in prison for the flight. He was escorted back to Miami aboard a commercial airliner Friday.

The boy was reunited with his mother, who lives in Mexico, shortly after the incident took place.
