Airborne 10.02.20: Amelia Search, United Aviate, CAP v Wildfires

Also: First New SAR CC-295, Nav Canada Tightens Belt, Ken Fowler Lost, United Pilot Agreement

Almost 100 years after American aviator Amelia Earhart took her first flight, her resting place has yet to be found but a local aviation group is hoping to find an answer.

It’s one of aviation’s greatest mysteries, what happened to Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, after they disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during her final flight in 1937. Dynamic Aviation has loaned its Beechcraft Model-18 aircraft to be used in new testing performed by Nauticos, a deep ocean exploring organization and Collins Radio Engineers off of Cape Charles, VA. EAA has teamed up with United Airlines to encourage young people to pursue aviation on all levels, with a variety of programs and activities that build on the strength of each organization. The joint effort will build on the success of current EAA and United Airlines programs. That includes EAA Young Eagles, which has introduced flight to 2.2 million young people since 1992, and the United's Aviate program that offers aspiring and established pilots the most direct and best path to United Airlines. As smoke clears from western Oregon, Civil Air Patrol pilots and specially trained aircrews are flying over areas damaged by devastating wildfires to photograph the conflagrations' impact. Two aircraft from the Oregon Wing and one from the Washington Wing joined the effort in cooperation with FEMA and Oregon Emergency Management on Sept. 20, marking the fifth day of CAP participation. CAP is photographing key infrastructure from the air to help assess fire damage. Aircrews are taking on assignments over the Archie, Beavercreek and Echo Mountain wildfires. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
