Phoenix Heliparts Customizes 1981 MD500D

Low-Time D Model Sprouts E Model Nose, Digital Avionics

A 1981 MD500D model has been customized with an 'E' nose, air conditioning and a complete Aerodynamix NVG package following a full restoration by Phoenix Heliparts of Phoenix, AZ. The company says this 30-year-old aircraft is now truly state of the art.

Official handover to Team C&H, of Jacksonville, Florida will take place at 1330 Sunday, March 6 in a brief ceremony at Phoenix's exhibit at the annual Heli-Expo, this year in Orlando, FL.

The customer, Wayne McCall, was impressed to see these upgrades to his helicopter. "Knowing that a 30 year-old helicopter can look, feel and function like new, is really impressive; it is also impressive to know it has only 698.2 hours TTSN. This machine is indistinguishable from new," he said.
It is believed to be the lowest-time MD500 D in service today.

The aircraft, with a new "E" series nose, also sports a powerful, 420 SHP Rolls Royce/Allison 250 engine. The modern avionics and NVG equipment make this helicopter as capable as new, digital technology can provide. There are also some unique modifications as well. The Auto Reignition, and Compressor inspection panel were developed in-house by Phoenix Heliparts engineering and applications staff. These were done by way of 8110 approval; STC's are pending.

"The "D" was certified in 1976 and was superseded by the E-model in 1982, however many market segments still prefer the 'D' model", said Tina Cannon, Phoenix Heliparts president. "We're happy to offer our customers with any needs they may have, including total repairs and detailed customizations.'
Phoenix has over 20 years experience servicing its diverse, worldwide customer base, and specializes in MD500 maintenance, overhaul, completions, restorations, refurbishments and avionics. New platforms in the works for 2011 include an STC/PMA program and UH-1 retrofits.
