Navy F/A-18 Bombs Virginia Beach

Whoops!

There were no injuries reported when a US Navy F/A-18 accidentally dropped an inert training bomb over the resort town of Virginia Beach, VA on Tuesday afternoon.

The Virginian Pilot reports the aircraft was returning to nearby Oceana NAS from a training mission over Dare County, NC when the bomb was accidentally dropped from the fighter. The dummy bomb caused minor damage to a wall next to a warehouse, according to Navy officials.

The aircraft was on approach to land when the device was dropped. The bomb -- measuring roughly 18 inches long -- carried no explosives, though it was armed with a smoke charge to mark its impact location.

The F/A-18 was part of a flight of two that had conducted practice bombing runs at a training range in North Carolina, said Lt. Cmdr. Dave Nunnally.

Though he hadn't seen the damage, Nunnally said it was reported to be limited to "some chipped paint."
