Six Lost In MO Skydiving Plane Accident

Witnesses Say Twin Otter Lost Engine On Takeoff

Officials report six people were lost Saturday afternoon when a DeHavilland Twin Otter turboprop (file photo of type, below) carrying skydivers went down in a residential area shortly after takeoff from Sullivan Regional Airport, near St. Louis, MO.

An airport worker told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the plane -- which was carrying seven skydivers with Quantum Leap Skydiving Center, and the pilot -- experienced power loss in one of its engines just after takeoff.

Authorities said four people were killed in the accident, as the plane came down in a tree near homes. Two more passengers on the plane died later at area hospitals... and two persons are still listed in critical and serious conditions.

No injuries were reported on the ground.

"We didn’t know where it was coming from," witness Charles Clonts said, describing the sound of the approaching plane before its engines came to a stop. "In seconds, it just crashed."
