Airborne 06.08.16: SF NIMBYs v Blue Angels, ADS-B Rebate, Sport Pilot Academy

Also: Blue Angels Support, Power Flow, Lily UAV, Airbus Reef, UAV Regs, Boeing IT Workers, C Series

San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos is once again speaking out against the Navy Blue Angels participation in the city’s annual Fleet Week celebration held in October.

This time, he is bolstering his position by pointing to the accident last week which resulted in the fatal injury of Blue Angels pilot, Jeff Kuss. Avalos said he would introduce a non-binding resolution by August that would restrict the team to flying over the San Francisco Bay during Fleet Week. Avalos said, “It’s about them crashing and hitting a building…a place where people live. It’s about the terror that they cause in people when they strafe neighborhoods. That’s something I hear about all the time when Blue Angels fly overhead.” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta and Deputy Administrator Mike Whitaker have announced an upcoming rebate program that will help general aviation pilots equip their aircraft with ADS-B out equipment that is required by January 2020. The rebates will be available in late September, and the FAA will announce the effective date soon. EAA says their Sport Pilot Academy offers aspiring pilots two ultimate elements for flight training success: focused, dedicated instruction and learning at the EAA Aviation Center in Oshkosh. The new three-week academy starts on August 27 and runs through September 17. The group and individual instruction for all eligible ages are designed for success in a three-week period, including the pilot checkride to earn a sport pilot certificate. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
