F-16 Apparently Bombs Wrong Target

Five Iraqis Killed, Pentagon "Deeply Regretful"

In an age where wars are fought with pinpoint accuracy and lowering "collateral damage" is one of the main operational goals, it sometimes escapes us that mistakes can and do happen. Such was apparently the case in northern Iraq over the weekend, where an F-16 dropped a satellite-guided munition on the wrong house, killing five Iraqis inside.

The military called the operation "a cordon and search operation to capture an anti-Iraqi force cell leader" in Aitha, about 30 miles south of Mosul. The satellite bomb hit a house that the military says "was not the intended target.... The intended target was another location nearby," according to a statement quoted by the Washington Post.

The owner of the house tells a slightly different story. Ali Yousef told reporters 14 people were killed in the bombing -- seven of them children -- all from the same family.

The statement said the military "deeply regretted the loss of possibly innocent lives."
