Salvage Crews Recover Black Boxes from Downed Adam Air 737

Flight Recorders To Be Sent To US For Analysis

Two flight data recorders from an Adam Air flight that went missing New Year's Day have been recovered.

Salvage crews located the boxes from the 737-400 that went down off the coast of South Sulawesi. It was carrying 102 passengers and crew and sent a distress signal before controllers lost contact, as ANN reported.

Despite a massive search, no bodies have been recovered.

According to AFX News Limited, the flight data recorder was found Monday, 6,500 feet below on the sea floor. The cockpit voice recorder was located more than 6,200 feet down Tuesday, according Transport Minister Jusman Sjafei Djamal.

The aircraft itself is believed to be at a depth of about 5500 feet in the Makassar Strait.

Indonesia's questionable safety record prompted the European Union to blacklist all of its carriers. The Federal Aviation Administration downgraded Indonesia's oversight rating in April, prompting the US Embassy in Jakarta to issue a warning calling for all American citizens traveling in Indonesia to avoid flying local airliners.

The flight recorders will be sent to the US for analysis, according to the country's National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT).
