New LSA From Down Under Sports Unusual Feature

Airgyro To Distribute Outback 2 In The US

Are you ready for another new light sport aircraft? At Oshkosh this week, Airgyro Aviation announced the Outback 2, sourced from Hughes Engineering in Australia, is being officially introduced in the US market as an S-LSA, with Airgyro as distributor.

The Outback 2 brings Australian design priorities to the LSA game. The plane is based on a triangulated, welded-steel frame and safety cage, and has wings and tail made from aluminum, but covered with a lightweight fabric for ease of maintenance in harsh environments.

One of the plane's most unusual features is a removeable, non-structural belly panel below the left seat. When the panel and seat are both removed, the panel and other interior components can be serviced by a technician standing on the ground, through the floor.

It looks like a great idea... but was causing some double takes here at Oshkosh, where one passer-by saw legs extending from the bottom of the plane, and just had to yell, "Yabba-dabba-do!"

The Outback 2 features Rotax 912 ULS power, a claimed useful load of 485 pounds, and a list price of $120,000. A four-place variant called the Outback 4 is available as a kit for the US Experimental Amateur-built category.
