With Airlines Booming, China Turns To 'Foreigners' To Fly Its Planes

Phillipe Burtonboy First Of Many

You might not know the name Phillipe Burtonboy... but just about everyone in Chengdu, China, does.

The 50-year old Belgian is the first foreigner ever to pilot an airliner in Southwest China, flying for United Eagle airlines. He is certainly the first outsider to fly for China since the communist take-over in 1949... but he almost certainly won't be the last.

China's suddenly-booming commercial aviation industry is growing faster than the airlines can train new pilots. So, to keep up with demand... China is hiring foreigners to do the flying.

Reuters reports 16 Indian nationals have just wrapped up training as flight attendants... another first on a Chinese domestic carrier.

With 1,600 new commercial aircraft expected to take to the Chinese skies over the next five years alone -- each needing at least ten new pilots to fly a full schedule -- it's a trend that will continue, say Chinese papers, well into the foreseeable future.
