Airborne 09.22.17: Breitling DC-3, World Aerobatic Championships, CFI Training

Also: Egan PLIMP, Aero-Honesty, Orbital ATK, United Airlines 747, New AIA Boss, Bristow Norway, ABS Celebrates 50th

Having departed from Geneva last March, the Breitling DC-3 made its grand return to Switzerland after circling the globe, landing in Sion where 100,000 passionate enthusiasts had gathered to attend the Breitling Sion Airshow 2017.

A new feat for this legendary plane still in perfectly flightworthy condition and which is celebrating its 77th birthday this year. To share its passion for aviation with a broad audience around the planet, Breitling launched its DC-3 on a world tour in stages that notably included the Balkans, the Middle East, India, South East Asia, the Pacific and North America. Russia’s Mikhail Mamistov has been crowned FAI World Aerobatic Champion for a third time after a hard-fought competition in South Africa. The legendary Aerobatic pilot won the FAI Gold Medal at the 29th FAI World Aerobatic Championships in Malelane, SA. He came out top ahead of two strong French pilots: Francois Rallet was in second place with French team mate Olivier Masurel Aerobatics in third. The top three pilots were all flying the Extra 330SC. The recent Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee (ARAC) report that was approved last week contains a recommendation to change requirements that require CFIs to hold that designation for two years before they may train a first time instructor applicant. The change recommended by the ARAC says that a CFI must: “have held a flight instructor certificate for at least 24 months or has completed a FAA approved standardization course at a part 141 training school that provides instruction on the intricacies of training a flight instructor applicant.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
