Pennsylvania To Beef Up Six Airports

Rendell Administration Delivers $4 Million in State Funds

Pennsylvania Transportation Secretary Allen G. Biehler today announced that $4 million in state aviation development grants have been awarded to six Pennsylvania airports.
"Safe and well-maintained airports are the hallmark of our efforts to support aviation in the Commonwealth," Biehler said. "These grants will be used for a variety of projects, including land acquisition, environmental and airport-development planning, runway and taxiway improvements, security and lighting."

Biehler said the funds are administered by PennDOT's Bureau of Aviation. The airports and funding are listed below:

  • Allegheny County:
    Rock Airport, Tarentum -- $1.5 million for the construction of a runway, taxiway turnaround and apron.
  • Berks County:
    Reading Regional Airport, Reading -- $225,000 to construct t-hangar taxilanes.
  • Dauphin County:
    Bendigo Airport, Tower City -- $45,000 for the installation of a runway lighting and beacon.
  • Elk County:
    St. Marys Municipal Airport, St. Marys -- $450,000, for construction of a terminal building.
  • Fayette County:
    Connellsville Airport, Connellsville -- $1,050,000 for the construction of a general aviation terminal.
  • Lancaster County:
    Lancaster Airport, Lancaster -- $1.1 million for the construction of a hangar, taxiway and apron area.
