Airborne 11.04.19: DA50-RG 1st Flt, KSMO Wastes $$, Zenith Workshops

Also: Mohawk Down, Cuba Ban, K-MAX Helicopter, Updated FAA Helicopter Handbook

In April 2019 at AERO Friedrichshafen, Diamond Aircraft announced changes on the DA50 program, including a new engine concept with the 300 hp Continental CD-300 and retractable gear.

On Thursday, the airplane flew for the first time. "The first flight was conducted by the crew as planned and all systems were working as expected," said Sören Pedersen, Head of Flight Test, Diamond Aircraft Austria. "Since all new elements are already well known from other aircraft out of the Diamond aircraft family, the DA50 made a very mature impression from the first lift off on. A first cruise performance test point showed that the expectation could be met easily. The DA50 showed a good agility and an “easy to fly” behavior, meaning that the handling qualities were very satisfying on the first impression." Believe it or not, aviation users of California’s Santa Monica Municipal Airport (KSMO) must pay for multi-million-dollar airport projects at KSMO that do not actually benefit them or the airport, according to a recent informal determination by the FAA. In an Oct. 21 letter in response to an informal Part 13 complaint – initiated by the FAA as the result of an inquiry by NBAA, GAMA and others – the agency concluded that the city of Santa Monica is able to use airport revenue for projects associated with its runway shortening project, including pavement removal, pavement pulverization, soil stabilization and hydroseeding. The popular Zenith hands-on kit aircraft building workshop is returning to central Florida for the DeLand DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase November 14-16. Starting on Thursday morning, November 14, staff and volunteers will provide an overview of the fuselage / cabin assembly of the STOL CH 750 Super Duty aircraft kit, putting together the entire fuselage to demonstrate the ease of assembly made possible with final hole size match-drilled assemblies. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
